Volunteering in another culture, in a different setting to your own country really benefits you, the volunteer. You will be in a setting where you are not seen as a tourist, but as part of the family and a valued person at the orphanage. As you will be living with a host family, you will experience the true Africa which will include cooking traditional Ghanaian food, washing your clothes outside in the sun, among others which will give you the true African experience. Not only will you be experiencing a different culture in a close and personal way, but working with some amazing children. There are currently 11 children at the orphanage each one of them attending school. They are full of life and joy and you will give them such happiness by joining in with their games. They will love to equally teach you, and will take great joy in teaching you Ghanaian songs and learning the language. You will truly learn as much from them as they will from you. You will gain so much from volunteering with us, but please remain aware that this is an African country you will be volunteering in, and so will be completely different to anything you have experienced before. This is part of the learning when volunteering with us, and we long to see our volunteers grow just as much as the children at the orphanage.
Many possibilities for other initiatives, depending on your interest:
Typical time:
Morning: Help the children to brush their teeth and get them dressed. Serve breakfast and tidy their beds. Teach the children about health and hygiene.
Day: Serve Lunch; take care of the children in the orphanage. Help them to learn some basic conversational English in a fun and playful manner. Arrange for activities like games, music, drawing, etc. Bring children back from school and help them in their homework.
Evening: Serve dinner to the children; help in the kitchen and also in washing dishes, clothes and cleaning of the orphanage premises, putting the children to bed.
